Useful And Essential Facts About Recumbent Trikes

By Michelle Hughes

The name tricycle is usually used to refer to any three-wheeled, human- or gravity-powered vehicle. The abbreviation trike is used commonly in many cases. There are several different kinds of tricycles, including freight and cycle rickshaws. These vehicles are used for different purposes, including transportation, shopping, recreational, and exercise among many others. The use of tricycles for transportation is very common in Asia and Africa where most countries are still developing. Here are facts regarding recumbent trikes.

According to historical records, the history of tricycles goes way back to either 1655 or 1680. Also, history mentions that tricycles were invented by a disabled German man. The man was called Stephan Farffler and his intention was to enable himself keep his mobility. Farffler designed a tricycle which was powered by hand cranks. He borrowed the concept from his watch-making career.

Over the years, different people from different countries have developed different versions of tricycles. Some of the notable inventions were made in France and Britain. A British inventor named Denis Johnson patented a design for making trikes. One thing that all the inventions had in common is that they powered by hands or legs.

In the West, trikes are used commonly by senior citizens and kids. These groups of people prefer tricycles because they offer more stability compared to bicycles. However, even though tricycles may offer more stability when they are moving in a straight line, they have poor dynamic lateral stability. That means that the rider has to be extra careful when they are negotiating a corner to avoid tipping over.

In countries such as the UK where there are very many enthusiasts of tricycles, there are associations for people to register with. Associations organize events such as tours, time trials, and day rides among other activities. The associations are responsible for regulating the industry. They also set standards and ensure consumer safety. They also maintain statistics about tricycles among many other activities and responsibilities.

Various tricycles vary in the way their wheels are configured. Tadpole and delta are some of the most common configuration for wheels in tricycles. There is one wheel at the front and two rear wheels for the case of delta configuration. On the contrary, two wheels are at the front while one wheel is at the rear for the case of tadpole wheel configuration. Other kinds of wheel configurations have been in use over the years but do not exist anymore.

There are also different types of tricycles in use today. The two most common types are upright and recumbent tricycles. Upright tricycles are similar to bicycles, with a diamond or open frame. Upright tricycles may be have delta or tadpole wheel configurations. Steering is done through a handlebar. Non-tilting upright tricycles usually have a lot of stability issues and one must be careful to avoid accidents.

The other kind of trike used nowadays is recumbent. Due to its low center of gravity, this model have more stability. Also, it has less aerodynamic drag. Nevertheless recumbent are heavier, wider and cost a lot more. Since they are normally set very low, they may not be visible to other traffic.
